Pokemon Yellow: Playthrough Part 2

The trek continues! First Badges, first Team Rocket encounters and we pick up one of the original starters!

I caved and reset the game back to an earlier save and redid the second half of Viridian Forest so that Pikachu didn't loose his Thundershock (yeah I originally had messed that up), I also picked up a Mankey and trained it up to Lvl 10 for the Gym Battle with Brock. Mankey was able to Low Kick his way through Geodude and Onix without too much problem. In the anime, Brock decides to come with Ash on his journey after he is defeated, but unfortunately (or fortunately, not sure) Brock is depicted more as a standoffish 'badass' here and it's not even an idea that is floated (later Misty will stay at her Gym as well, the game makers probably didn't want to have to have them following behind you and Pikachu :) )

I was able to train up my Pikachu, Pidgey and Mankey some more off the Trainers between Pewter City and Mt. Moon, healed up outside the cave entrance and entered, after catching a Sandshrew and Clefairy. Inside the Mountain I took out every trainer including both Super Nerds, several Lass and Youngsters, a Mountain Man and all the Team Rocket grunts - in another nice touch for the Yellow Version we fight Jessie & James with their true-to-the-anime Pokemon (Ekans, Koffing and Meowth). Before leaving the cave I picked up all the TMs the Rare Candy, HP UP and a few other items plus the Helix Fossil (which if I remember correctly becomes Omanyte while the Dome Fossil makes Kabuto). I also caught a Geodude, Zubat and Paras that I sent all to the computer.

I had my first Pokemon evolution shortly after leaving Mt. Moon, in the grass outside Cerulean City - Pidgey evolved into Pidgeotto. I was doing a little leveling to get my three Pokemon up to Lvl 20 because I knew I would have to fight Gary again before the Nugget Bridge.

My Pokemon just before fighting Gary in Cerulean City

It turns out I remembered Gary being much stronger than he actually was, his Spearow, Rattata, Sandshrew and Eevee were only Lvl 15-18 so I was able to mop the floor with him in a fairly quick fashion. A heal and I took out the Nugget Bridge trainers and talked to the trainer on the hill to get Charmander. I took out the trainer in the field to the left and trained up Charmander to Lvl 16 - where he evolved to Charmeleon. While in the grass I also caught an Oddish, Bellsprout and Venonat.

I forgot to draw this trainer out to fight him so I could get that TM, so I'll have to come back when I can CUT.

I then set off to Bill's place, battling all the trainers on the way. Bill's accidental transformation into a Pokemon was humourous in the original games but Pikachu adds to the humor here as she acts confused and then makes a perfect 'WTF!' face when he transforms back into a human. Bill thanked me for the help with an SS. Anne Ticket so now it's time to set off to Vermilion City!

But first, a quick stop by the Gym, Pikachu is at Lvl 22 by this point and easily takes down the two sub-trainers and Misty without so much as a potion. I then go through the house guarded by the police woman and fight the rocket grunt out back, get the TM for Dig and teach it to my Charmeleon. Heading south now to Vermilion City, through the underground tunnel.

My Pokemon just before getting to Vermilion City, I picked up Jigglypuff and Abra just outside of Cerulean by the Daycare.
Time to save for now!

----------

I hope to play some more tomorrow, next is Vermilion City where we should face Lt. Surge and his Raichu, take down all the trainers on the SS. Anne and hopefully pickup Squirtle if I remember correctly. A note to anyone who is wondering, I own Pokemon Yellow (along with Red, Blue and many others) but I am playing this on an emulator so I can take screen shots - it's also the reason why my Time is so high, because I'm using the time skip to walk long distances it adds to the time on the clock (and I tend to do other things while on the computer so even if it was accurate time it's not all playing time). Still I'm probably 6-7 hours of playtime in!
